DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Completely memorable and influential experience!! If I could, I would do the full year program.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Instructors are excellent and have real world experience in their respective fields.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

The food purchase card lasted almost the entire semester.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The location of the school is in an extremely touristy area of the city, which is nice and central, but also lacks a lot of authentic Danish experiences. It is really up to the students to seek out cultural activities and relationships.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen is a very expensive city!

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Skip the coffee and pastries every day, and make drinks from home before going out.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

I was not enrolled in Danish during my semester.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The city it is located in
  • Knowledgeable and engaged instructors
* What could be improved?
  • Work to better integrate Danish students/locals and DIS students. Possibly offer classes with Danes and not simply all Americans.
  • Don't allow students to be placed in Homestays over 30/45min away.
  • More money on the transportation cards, if you are encouraging kids to explore various areas of the city, give them more money for the metro, S train, etc.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Do a full year at DIS instead of a semester!! The time goes by so quickly, cherish every moment of it, and get out and about to every part of the city possible.
