DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes, see above. Much more comfortable living on my own, as an adult. I think it gave me insight to life after college.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Coming from Wellesley College the academics were not rigorous at all. However, most of the people I knew at DIS were really struggling and found it quite rigorous.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

The stipend for those not in a homestay could be bigger.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It's a North American student body, so I guess in a way I chose to not be that integrated in my abroad experience. It would have been nice to get together with Danish students, even if we didn't take classes at the University.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

All was good except for a class trip to Turkey where the instructor was the only supervisor and he did not care for the safety of the female students. We all felt extremely unsafe and several dangerous situations occurred that he refused to address. We brought this up to the school and their response was "He's been working here for many years and we've never had any complaints, so what do you want us to do?"

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I loved my time at DIS. I grew up a lot while I was there. I had more autonomy than I'd ever had. I matured through new and uncomfortable situations. I loved that I had so much time to travel and that I could travel with my school.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Maybe 200 kroner
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cook your own food. Use student discounts everywhere.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Spanish second semester beginner
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? It's difficult when the entire Danish population speaks English fluently and would rather speak in English to you than hear your horrible Danish. Practice conversations with your SRA or roommates.
