What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I saw so much of Europe and the number one thing I wanted to do when I was there was travel. It was definitely worthwhile and I'll never forget it!

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The building I lived in was falling apart and not suitable for 30 people to live in. Other than that, it was in a great location and I liked the people I lived with.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

It was easy to see a doctor right away but they weren't always the most useful in diagnosing the problem or giving the right medication.

* Safety:

The city is very safe but you have to be careful of pick picketers.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen is an expensive city but I'm sure I could have budgeted better.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? No
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $200

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

We mostly just used it in class. We were learning beginning Danish so we couldn't say more than a sentence or two here and there and hold very basic conversations.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? I had never taken Danish before
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Be engaging in class and practice ordering your food at a restaurant or try to talk with your Danish family in Danish.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • How organized and responsive DIS was
  • Traveling with DIS on study tours
  • Having a visiting family without having to live with a host family
* What could be improved?
  • Cultural integration
  • Housing
  • More books in the library
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish that I hadn't signed up for quite so many things. I was pretty overwhelmed and really busy the entire time. I felt I had spread myself too thin and couldn't fully engage in any one activity. But at the same time I didn't want to miss out on anything so maybe it was worth it.
