CISabroad (Center for International Studies): San Jose - Semester in Costa Rica

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The classes I've taken here teaches the material from the Latin American perspective, which is different than the Unites States perspective. I have learned things from a different point of view, which broadens my mind. And I can see what is being taught inside the classroom, outside.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The grading system is similar to the US system. You still have the same grading scale. However, they have to change contact hours to credit hours. The teaching methods are very hands-on. In my opinion, it is better than the states because of that aspect and the field trips. The teachers require a lot of work from you, but they genuinely care and are helpful with whatever you need.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Universidad Veritas, a prestigious private school in Costa Rica. It is a small school and that makes it easier. All the faculty is helpful with whatever you need and easily accessible.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My host family is one of the best. They are welcoming, take care of anything I need, and very giving. I feel like part of the family. Personally, I haven't had any problems with my neighborhood. I live 10 minutes from school (walking) and nightlife is a quick taxi ride.

* Food:

My host mom was very accommodating to any dietary preferences. In fact, when she found out that my favorite fruit is pineapple, the next morning I had a slice of it with my breakfast.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Gorgeous beaches, volcanoes, snorkling, 4-wheeling, welcome crash party, ziplining

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The program informed us of safety and health issues extremely well. Of course there is danger, but if you are smart and always on your guard, you should be fine. I just carry around pepper spray that I bought here for $10, just to be safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

The spanish courses are very intensive and one-month courses. It is a lot to learn, but the class is 4 hours Monday through Friday. You definitely practice the language everyday in class and with the host family. Many people do speak English, to some degree. I have improved very much and loved every second of it.
