CISabroad (Center for International Studies): London - Semester at the University of Westminster

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Very worthwile! If I had to do it over again, I don't think I would change anything. It definetely increased my cultural awareness because I met people from all over the place.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The set-up of the semester was different from the United States. Each class only met once a week for 2-3 hours until the beginning of April, then we had off until the beginning of May, then the exam period. Also, the grading system in the United Kingdom only went up to 80. I also only had 1-2 big assignments per class.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

We had a very nice on-site director, but I felt we could have done a broader social program.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Wasn't any on-campus availability, but the local restuarants were satisfactory. There was plenty of variety. Future advice would be to chose two or three places that are reasonably priced, and stick to them.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Went to a couple soccer matches while over here, saw the site for the London 2012 games, an overnight trip to York arranged by my school were the highlights for me.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

It was reasonably safe here - I was able to walk 20 minutes to find a bus at 3 a.m. without any trouble.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Bugdet money wisely - make sure you plan for any trips, etc. Also keep in mind that things are probably more expensive overseas.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
