What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely. I learned independence, how to break out from my comfort zone, the benefits of service work, and I met a ton of new friends, both American and African.

While in Cape Town I learned Xhosa and Afrikaans, 2 of the 11 official languages in South Africa. My program did an excellent job encouraging us to practice using these languages in every day conversations.

Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Don't be embarrassed if you are unsure or think you have a poor accent. Languages get better with time!

  • Living arrangements; I wish we had been more integrated with south africans
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had researched more of South African socio-political history prior to arriving in Cape Town. While there, I was educated on apartheid etc but it would have been nice if I had been more prepared.
