Broadreach: Traveling - Costa Rica Intro to Medicine 12-Day Adventure

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Through my experience, I gained first-hand, immersive, medical experience that I couldn't find anywhere else. Not only did I learn a ton from the professionals at the clinic, but I left Costa Rica with detailed CPR training, a First Aid certification, and Wilderness Medicine training.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

The healthcare system in the clinic that I attended in Costa Rica was incredible, with very friendly and knowledgable staff members. As a precaution, before my trip I received a malaria vaccine.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

I had an amazing time in Costa Rica, and if I were to do it all over again, I might want to choose a longer trip so I could engage in a foreign culture even more!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Outside of the general trip expenses, there was a very minimal cost requirement for extra food and personal expenses.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

There was ample opportunity to engage in the Spanish-speaking environment in Costa Rica, but for students less comfortable in the language, it was not a daily requirement.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? I had very little Spanish experience before my trip, but with the help of my peers, instructors, and a pocket Spanish-English dictionary, I was able to pick up some new language skills!

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • I formed an incredible bond with my fellow students, one that I have maintained to this day.
  • My instructors were caring, intelligent, and fascinating people that I considered friends by the end of the trip.
  • I gained first-hand, immersive, medical experience that I couldn't find anywhere else.
* What could be improved?
  • I would have loved a bit more of a detailed itinerary before the trip began, since I was a bit unclear about our daily activities.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had known that my peers would be just as nervous as me at the beginning of the trip, but we would all become close friends in no time.
