Brigham Young University: Amman - Jordan Study Abroad Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was very worthwhile. I would have wanted to have more friends, and dive deeper into the culture. I made significant leaps in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I feel like the program was designer more for that, and I made greater advances in language skills, which was my aim as well.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was very rigorous, and intense. Those would be two words I would use to describe the program. We had many resources to study and reference from that were provided by our professor, Dil. The homework was useful but took a lot of time. The thing that made this course intense was the speed at which we covered material, and the homework load. The material itself was difficult but the time it took made it harder to complete.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Qasid Institute was very helpful whenever we had issues rise up with needing things fixed, they were quickly resolved. The front desk clerk was always trying to help deliver the letters that came to me, which i greatly appreciated.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

the apartment we lived in was wonderful, we hardly had issues with anything, and did not run out of water. The internet was unstable though.

* Food:

the food was cheap, and I enjoyed buying and making my own food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt like in the context of living with Americans and the amount of homework we had made it difficult to be fully integrated with the local culture. But the speaking assignments gave me opportunities to go out, meet people and make friends, and our neighbors were quite friendly and invited me over for dinner. I spent a good amount of time with natives, but I since I spent a year in Egypt living with a host family, I felt like I was not very integrated with the local culture. Mostly, I spent time with my roommates and fellow American students. The weekends gave me opportunities to visit people and historical sites.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Our professor was very helpful in telling us where to find dehydration packets. I did not have any other experience with healthcare.

* Safety:

If you're careful and safe, you will be safe. Girls shouldn't go out at nights, or they should be accompanied with three other people. Stay away from soccer games in the stadiums. People should travel with others, don't find yourself alone. Be observant to those around you, and the behavior of the natives. Try to mimic them, and you will draw less attention to yourself. When a girl is in an all girl setting, she can be more open and more outgoing if that's her personality. Girls who act bubbly or very happy around native young men send the wrong message to them, that they are interested in the young man.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The food was cheap. The only extra costs were field trips and souvenirs which were optional, but I think I stayed on a decent budget.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 50 dollars
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Buy food from local stores and not the international super markets, it's cheaper from local places. Cook, and don't eat out very often. Budget what souvenirs you'll buy, and bargain, don't accept the first price they offer, usually go down 50%. If the prices are marked, it's usually not a bargaining place, but there are exceptions. Be smart.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

This was the main goal of the program. To use our language and improve in our language skills.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Arabic 202
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Look for opportunities to be with people. Use your interests to your advantage; Explore the city and see where you can find places that accommodates those interests, find other people who share your interest and you will soon discover friends, and be hanging out with Arabs. Be aware of cultural boundaries, girls should be with girls, and not spend time with young men. Issues will arise if you do, and you will be sending them the wrong message. Get to know your neighbors. Being a part of a family will give you huge cultural insight, versus with getting to know one person.

  • the fellow students who became a great group of friends
* What could be improved?
  • I could have personally made changes.
  • Be more prone to getting to know famililes
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Inside their homes, you can understand what daily life is like for the family, and be more a part of society. You will then have more opportunities to meet others.
