Arcadia: London - Arcadia in London

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely, I want to live abroad or travel frequently for my future job. I can't wait to go back to London, it holds a special place in my heart <3

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was difficult to get used to the teaching style and different coursework expectations. You get much less feedback in general and the expectations of the students is culturally very different... a 70 is an A, and it is harder to get that 70 than any A I've ever gotten in the U.S. The teachers know a lot, and they expect students to be passionate about what they are teaching. They expect you to go above and beyond and do your own research and reading, aside from what is assigned, otherwise you will not get high marks. Just doing the required amount isn't enough. Not to say it isn't possible, just different than how people in the U.S. view it.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The people were very nice and helpful, they just weren't as involved with the London Now program as they were with the Arcadia freshman program going on concurrently. (mostly because the freshman lived above their office, where we did not) I think the are moving their office, so this might be fixed soon.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

It was a very good location (NIDO King's Cross), so very close to City University and King's Cross Station. Sheets, dishes, and cooking things were provided. You share a room with another person in the exchange program, so who you get will affect your happiness with the situation a lot. All of the students in the London Now program were in the same hall, so it was very fun. Very secure location, but the guards were on a little power trip...

* Food:

Everyone says the food isn't good, they are crazy!!!! The food in England is amazing! It is fresher and better for you. The McDonald's is even good... just don't expect good Mexican food, lol.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The clubs and pubs are awesome =) Arcadia arranged a trip to Wales, which was amazing! I went cliff diving, definitely the experience of a lifetime!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Don't go anywhere alone at night... pretty standard for any large city. Watch your stuff, it will get stolen if you don't watch it, even in a library.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't let your stuff get stolen, that will set you back alot, haha. But the monthy travel pass for zones 1 and 2... it will be worth it! Everything is more expensive in general. If you have a very constrained budget, I would not recommend going to England.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The ease of travel to other countries and the classes I got to take.
* What could be improved?
  • I think it's just whatever you make of it, not much the program should do to improve.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I really enjoyed this program, but if you aren't set on the country you want to go to, look in to more exotic places. London is very similar to New York City, which is awesome, but not always what people are looking for in a study abroad experience. I wish I had picked a place that spoke a different language, even if I didn't know it. If you are set on London, this is a great program though =)

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Introduction to British Art and Architecture

Course Department: LONS ARUK 110
Instructor: Anna Lee
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Great class! We went on field trips to museums all over London. This was a great way to get out and see the city, and gave me a different perspective on the culture. I probably learned more in this course about England than anywhere else in my trip. Getting to see the actual paintings and buildings in person that we learned about in class is an experience I wouldn't trade for anything. I participated in more in this class than I would have at home (class size about 15)

Comments: I really enjoyed this course. I feel like my writing improved and I improved my creative thinking. I never received any feedback on my work, which was a little frustrating, but the teacher was awesome.

Comments: Loved this course!!! We read the plays and then saw them performed, a great way to get out and experience the culture! Very sweet teacher =) Discussion heavy and very engaging class. Comments: This is the only class I took with local students. The whole grade was based off of one paper worth 20% and on test worth 80%. Very interesting class. Very heavy on reading. I participated the same in this class than I would have at home (class size about 150)
Credit Transfer Issues: Hasn't transferred yet.
