Advanced Studies England: Bath - ASE Study Centre

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely. I gained independence and a wider world-view, and the challenging courses kept me focused on academics.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was heavy, and consequently I was not able to do as much traveling as I had hoped to be able to do. The grading system was about equivalent to that at W&M. I liked the small, seminar style classes which consisted of a large amount of discussion. Also, the relationships between administrators, professors and students was great; everyone was on a first name basis.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The small size of the program (37 students when I was there) allows for a personal experience.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Loved living in a townhouse on Northampton Street (25 minute walk from class).

* Food:

Given 40 GBP per week for food; a sufficient stipend.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Very safe feeling city.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Initial expenses for toiletries, etc that you do not bring with you can add up!

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Students who are looking for a real STUDY abroad programme, not a 'semester of travel' should definitely consider ASE. Bath is an amazing city to live in and living and going to class with other American students helps minimize or eliminate culture shock.
