Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Paris

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a lot of language acquisition and challenged myself in so many ways. It was very difficult but rewarding.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

This program is extremely academically rigorous and is a full French immersion experience. I found it to be stressful and difficult, and most of the navigating I did of my local university was entirely on my own.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I found that the administration was helpful, but unwilling to make accommodations or show extra support to students struggling. In particular with the increase in strikes, the administration did not change any policies or offer any additional support despite the social mobilization and affects on classes and student life.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I enjoyed living in a student space and loved having other Middlebury students around for support. My space was really noce, but very far from the center of Paris.

* Food:

I loved the food in Paris, though none of it was provided by the program.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Extremely integrated in the sense that I was alone living in the city and doing direct enrollment, but I still felt very isolated and alone at times.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

N/A

* Safety:

I found Paris to be relatively safe if you are smart and careful. I was comfortable alone on the metro and walking in most neighborhoods, but it was important to attempt at speaking french and blending with locals to not be targeted as a tourist.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Language immersion was a requirement.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? At least one 200 level course at Middlebury.
How many hours per day did you use the language?

  • Living in Paris and traveling
  • Language Immersion
  • Cultural Immersion
* What could be improved?
  • Administrative support
  • Class selection
  • Academic rigor with direct enrollment courses
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? To advocate immediately when things are not going well or classes do not feel quite right. It is important to get ahead of problems! There is such a wide range of experiences to have on this program so it is really important to know what you want and need for living situations, courses, and overall immersion. You have the power over these decisions and it is important to communicate your needs to the administration.
