University of Otago, New Zealand: Study Abroad Programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to live on my own for the first time, and I saw/did things that I will never see or do again. Worthwhile is an understatement.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Not nearly as hard as Middlebury, but decent professors and facilities.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Great location, good people. Overall, a lot of fun.

* Food:

Cooked for myself. Food is generally more expensive in New Zealand than in the states.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The lack of language barrier helps. A lot.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I was injured playing soccer and I only had to pay a $5 surcharge to see the physio. Go national healthcare!

* Safety:

I never felt unsafe, but there was broken glass all over the neighborhood, and a jacket was stolen off of my laundry line.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Things are just generally more expensive in New Zealand.
