Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Paris

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The language, the culture, many good friends. Worthwhile.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The Middlebury Language School was amazing and super helpful. There are always events going on to participate in. Staffs were kind and lovely. The deducting in one star would be because the Ecole Special d'Architecture Administration were not so good. They were slow and not informative. Not helpful. Treated us like we've been there for years and did not provide us any transitioning while just throwing us into classes.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Satisfied. I lived in a foyer and made many friends while also improving my French. Could've had a better room because mine was on the ground floor and windows are barred up.

* Food:

Love the food in Paris. I balanced between cooking by myself and going out to new places to eat.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I had a great time if I ignored the few overnighters I did for my architecture project.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It is easy, if you manage and cook. (and not travel outside Paris as much as I did)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? around $300+ (including my travels)
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cook! It's fun to cook with friends and eat in. Plan your travel in advance so it's cheaper. (Many many good hostels around too!)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

All the time!

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? FREN0369
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Keep using it. Start it off with the language regardless of your competency.
