About

Youth International is an experiential learning program that combines rugged international travel, inter-cultural exchange, home stays with local families, volunteer community service work, and outdoor adventure. Teams of up to 14 people between the ages of 18 and 25 travel together with two group leaders. For a full 3-month semester, they explore three different countries in one region of the world.  Programs begin in September and February.

Through a balanced combination of experiences, each Youth International team member is set up for an intense and dynamic first-hand education about the region in which they are travelling. At the same time, they are presented with a unique environment and opportunity for self-discovery.

Youth International has been sending groups on learning adventures abroad since 1997, and offers three separate programs: Asia, South America, and Africa.

Youth International Programs Includes:

  • Home Stays with Local Families: Live in homes with local people. Understand their life by living it yourself.  There is normally at least one home stay in every country, and often more.  On average, participants live with host families for about one third of the trip.  Home stays often will be extremely basic and in remote villages where there is no electricity, running water, or other basic amenities.  There will also be some city home stays.  Accommodations also include hostels, camping, sleeping on trains, in temples, and more!

  • Travel and Cultural Exchange: Experience first-hand how people live, work, eat, and play.  Participate in tribal rituals.  Go on a spiritual quest.  Meditate while on retreat with Tibetan monks.  Visit ancient temples and spectacular historical sites, such as the Taj Mahal or Machu Picchu.   Explore some of the world’s greatest cities, such as Delhi, Bangkok, Kathmandu, La Paz, Cuzco, Quito, Nairobi, Dar es Salam, and more.

  • Volunteer Community Service Work: Lend a hand and make a difference.  Participants become personally involved in the issues and needs of the communities which they visit—a path towards the richest understanding of a culture.  Typical community service projects include: building or renovating schools and homes in poor areas of Nepal, assisting the sick and disabled in India, teaching English to Tibetan refugees, helping to build an orphanage in Bolivia, doing conservation work in the Ecuadorian rainforest, and constructing clean water tanks in African villages.

  • Outdoor Adventure: Trek across ancient mountain paths connecting tribal villages in the Himalayas or the Andes Mountains.  Hike to the peak of Mt. Kenya.  Sail through the Galapagos Islands, canoe down a river as your penetrate the jungles of the Amazon Basin, or search for wild animals on a safari in the African savannah.
