About

The program will provide historical perspectives of earthquake hazards in Japan and basic understandings of the variety of strategies used to mitigate such hazards. The Japanese are widely viewed as innovators and leaders in earthquake resistant design. Field trips within the Tokyo Metropolitan area will highlight both traditional and present-day approaches for ensuring the safety and serviceability of buildings, bridges, and other elements of the built environment. The concepts introduced in the companion course, Mechanics of Materials, are essential for understanding how engineered structures perform and potentially fail under loading. Cultural experiences will be enhanced through visits to Kyoto and the Japanese countryside. The host institution, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, has an excellent reputation as a center for research and education in agricultural science and engineering; it is ideally located for easy access to the heart of Tokyo.
