About

The Community Engagement and Service Learning Internships program in the Dominican Republic provides students the opportunity to immerse themselves in host country while participating in a local service learning internship opportunity. Service Learning is like community service but with an academic component. On this program, students will combine community service with academic coursework in a way that responds to community needs and helps students meet academic, social, and civic learning goals. The program is provided by ISA Service Learning which was created to propel students beyond the original confines of the classroom by providing opportunities to work at local NGOs, schools, clinics and businesses through structured service-learning and volunteer group projects. Service-Learning programs address the needs of the community and organization abroad while encouraging personal and professional growth, developing language proficiency and facilitating meaningful community engagement. Cultural activities and group excursions are included which will enrich the students’ experience and understanding of their host culture.

Students must exhibit a minimum proficiency of Spanish required by the host organization. Student language level will be determined by a language interview conducted prior to the program.
