About

Explore how differing perspectives on issues like health care, immigration, energy, gun control and jobs are making the United States far from united. On a road trip through five states and the District of Columbia with your peers, leaders and New York Times expert, set out to explore the origins of such divisions with the goals of promoting understanding and creating paths forward toward a more united nation.

Beginning in Washington, D.C., and ending on the shores of Lake Michigan, engage with cultures and communities from Capitol Hill to coal country. Examine Americans’ firmly held assumptions about one another and reflect on your own beliefs. Meeting and talking with people involved on all sides of these issues, learn to actively listen and effectively persuade as you explore what it means to hold fast to a belief. Learn how keeping an open mind and respecting others’ opinions are the first steps to productive dialogue, compassion and finding compromise in a diverse nation.
