The Education Abroad Network (TEAN): Townsville - James Cook University

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
While abroad, I learned that I am much more independent than I had ever known. I gained the knowledge of a new culture and the ability to adapt to new ways of life. Studying abroad was absolutely worthwhile and I would do it all over a million times!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I went to the health services that was available on campus and they were super helpful. The cost of my visit was covered by my healthcare through James Cook University for international students. The healthcare system was very similar to that at URI and the prescription costs were minimal.

* Safety:

I felt extremely safe while in Townsville. My advice would be to always travel with other people, don't travel alone.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? about $150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Keep track of what you spend and look back on it to see if you can change anything to cut costs.

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Very hands on and helpful!
  • Always available for my questions and concerns.
  • Affordable excursions- a lot of 'bang for your buck'
* What could be improved?
  • There is nothing that I think TEAN needs to improve on.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? There is nothing I would change about my semester abroad and I felt extremely prepared before leaving. I only wish that I had known how much I would've loved Australia beforehand so that I could have planned to stay for a full year!

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
