What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
From studying abroad not only did I learn a lot about the culture, but I learned a lot about myself. Being in Australia changed my life for the better and makes me want to travel the world. I think now from being abroad I try a lot harder at school because I want to go places in the world.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload compared to my home university is much more relaxed. Grades were based on attendance, maybe 2 assignments, a few quizzes, papers, midterms, and final exams. The grading system was very different from what I was used to but it was manageable as the professors explained how it correlated with the American University grading system. The teaching methods were very similar and the professors want you to do well and want to get to know you at the same time which was awesome! One difference that I enjoyed was how laid back the academics are at Bond. It gave me a lot of time to do well in my studies and to have fun while abroad. My host university is all about keeping everyone busy which can be annoying so this transition was probably one of my favorite parts about Bond.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

TEAN provided us with a residential director and she, Helen, was our main contact if anything happened. She was great! If something was wrong she was very easy to get a hold of. She knew a lot about the area and provided us with a lot of information about what was going on in the area. The program size was great. It was nice traveling with a small group because we all got to know each other pretty well and formed a lot of bond with each other. I would say my expectations were met and TEAN also exceeded my expectations.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in the Meriton Serviced Apartments and they were great! The amenities were fabulous. The neighborhood was safe which was nice. I would say my favorite part about the apartments was the location with being a 5 minute walk from the beach, short walk to 4 popular clubs, a shopping center, and bus access. We really did not have to buy and items to help us settle in besides food and maybe a few cosmetic items. The staff at the apartment was very helpful and made the whole experience that much better.

* Food:

I bought and cooked my own food at my own apartment so I had no problem getting what I wanted. The food was always fresh and a little on the expensive side, but pretty reasonable.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

For students going to study abroad in the Gold Coast try and do as many local attractions as possible because many are/can be free or cheaper than going somewhere else. While I was abroad I went skydiving, scuba diving, rock climbing, and many other things. These were organized through Bond. TEAN also has a monthly get together which is nice to be a part of.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The Gold Coast was very safe. However I would still always travel with a buddy if you are going out a night. Bond had a little clinic on campus and fortunately I never had to use it.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

  • Housing
  • Orientation
* What could be improved?
  • Appeal to more midwestern people
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? TEAN does really well working with the students and making sure they get the most out of their time abroad. Thanks for the great review Melissa. We'll do our best to 'appeal' to more people from the mid-west. :-) Hope you can help!
