Can't wait to get back! Past Review

The Education Abroad Network (TEAN): Dunedin - University of Otago

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Not that I have been very many places, but I know this one was special. Being able to travel and meet people before we even got to New Zealand was so great. TEAN prepared us incredibly well- from budgeting, to the packing list, to local words and culture- I would not have done this trip any other way. Going abroad truly gives you a different outlook on life and others viewpoints from around the world.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Safe city. Complete college town. Campus safety officers were often around.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Things in general, are much more expensive here than in America. That being said, there are cheaper options for everything, but defintiely plan on needing much more money than you typically would as an American college student.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? We split food among the flat, so about $50 dollars a week. TEAN helped us budget what we would need really well.

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

  • Support through the whole semester
* What could be improved?
  • Chosing academics was a bit tough, but nothing too bad.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? They told us over and over, but really- pack lightly. And Dunedin is cold, really cold.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
