Study Abroad Programs in Italy

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Even though I would not recommend the program I went on, I think it was definitely a worthwhile experience. It was not life-changing, but it did better my outlook and quality of life. I know the independence I gained has helped me and will help me when I graduate. I wished I had done more traveling, but I still saw some amazing things and met some unique people.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

There was a definite language barrier with the professors, even though it was an "American" university. While the other students saw the school as more challenging, coming from P.C. it was a joke. I expected more of a challenge or at least gaining some cultural perspective inside the classroom.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

As a stated previously, the staff was not helpful after about the first week in providing assistance and transition into Vinovo. They did not help us plan trips or answer our questions. They never knew what was going on when I had questions. Overall they were not helpful to my needs and not the kind of staff that is needed for a study abroad program.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had eight roommates, which was to much. I was suppose to have had 3 roommates and actually living in Torino, not Vinovo.

* Food:

I liked being able to cook for myself.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Well the village I was in was very safe, but I always felt unsafe in Torino. I never had any experience with the healthcare system or how my program addressed though issues.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Anywhere from $100 to $300, it really just depended on if I was traveling.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Save up for those unexpected traveling or shopping trips.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? none
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

Most of the staff spoke average English, some better than others, but the locals spoke known, which I expected so learning the small amount I did helped me to a degree. If anything the Beginning Italian course I was enrolled in was the most challenging class, with the most prepared and academically qualified professor to teach a course.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would not recommend this program, but I would most emphatically recommend going abroad.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Introduction to Film

Course Department:
Instructor: Zippel?
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This professor spoke okay english, I think he struggled with communication in another language. He would have probably taught the class better if he was leading it in his first language. We did watch films that probably taught me the most about Italian cinema.

Photography

Course Department:
Instructor: Marasco
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The professor actually spoke proficient english and had professional experience. It was just to much based in the history of photography rather than the practice.

Basic Drawing

Course Department:
Instructor: Collo?
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Cannot recall my professors name, Collo I believe. His English was not at the fluency level I believe is required to teach a course at what is suppose to be an American university. He did not understand the questions I was asking him, when I was confused about something he was teaching. Also the course guide described the class as a basic drawing course, not basics to architectural drawing basics. Needless to say I was mislead into taking a course I did not want to take. Somehow the professor gave me an A in the course, so I guess it ended up fine.
