Ireland Study Abroad Reflections: Comprehensive Reviews of Past Programs

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This program helped me make a decision about my future goals.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

This is a fantastic program and I highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in experiencing international travel and desires to really connect with a community.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everybody at Mary Immaculate College were warm, welcoming and helpful.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We were able to have our own rooms and full access to a kitchen. It became our home away from home.

* Food:

Fantastic food! I miss it already.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Working with different community groups really gave us a chance to get to know the locals. This was definitely not a touristy trip.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't need anything other than an over the counter decongestant while out there. It was easy to obtain and had I needed an hospital, one was close by.

* Safety:

I never felt unsafe in Limerick. Taxi's were always available at night, locals were extremely friendly and our housing had a doorman 24/7

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I was able to experience local culture by getting to know actual locals. But, I was also able to see tourist spots.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Several of our meals were covered for us. But, I chose to eat out more than make my own meals. If you budget yourself well, it is possible to spend less.

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? If you have access to a fridge, use it to save leftovers. Meals were large enough to serve as two meals. Use cash instead of credit cards. It is easier to keep track of how much cash you have on hand.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Research Service Learning

Course Department: UNIV
Instructor: Dr. David Wright
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was very hands on. We worked with the community and were able to talk with individuals from the area. We used reflection journals and discussions to assess the impact our service learning had on us and how we could use this information in our own communities. I would take this course again in a heartbeat!
Credit Transfer Issues: No issues with credit transfer.

Medieval Culture

Comments: This course was a fantastic way to study Medieval history. We were able to stand in the very locations that we had our discussions on. Journals and discussions were used to dive deeper into the areas we were studying. The readings were also fantastic.
