China Study Abroad Reflections: Comprehensive Reviews of Past Programs

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes. I got to see how people from across the world live and see how different is it from us here in America. It made me open my eyes to this different world. From this, it made me want to gear my photography more toward photojournalism and documentary.

Personal Information

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

They work that needed to be done before and after sucked. I think it could have been handled better.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Was a great way to see the culture. Wasn't enough time spent over there. Felt more like we were tourists then really there to truly experience the culture. I feel like there were too many of us together in out group.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Overall it was fine. The staff kept it clean. Internet was a pain to use and everything cost money. The plugs were different as well. Had to by a converter.

* Food:

There wasn't much variation in the food. We had the same food for dinner as we would for breakfast and lunch.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We got to go to one of the local markets and villages. It was the one day were I felt like I was truly experiencing what China is about. We got to see who they live on a day to day basis. The village people work and eat together. They work as a community.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

We always stayed in groups. however, with the language barrier, it was hard to convey where to go and one time, a taxi took us to a very sketchy part of town and left us there. It was quite unnerving.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Read as much about China as you can. Learn the language. At least learn key words. It will help. Also learn to barter. They will suck you dry because they know they can. Students in Photography would benefit best from this.
