It was definatly worth while and I gained basic Chinese knowledge and learnt about the culture of the country.

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

There is no better way to learn the language than be in the country itself. The classes were well structured and taught you important stuff that you would need to get round China, for example directions and food.
