SIT Study Abroad: Tunisia & Italy - Politics & Religious Integration in the Mediterranean

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2008

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The course work was elementary, and not rewarding.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administration's only success was in placing host families. The academic director was otherwise incompetent, and would often blame the system on his own inadequacies.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

One bedroom of a suburban house to myself. Menzah 8, Arianna. Twenty minute walk to the metro.

Family was wonderful, location was ok.

* Food:

Would be hard to be a vegatarian.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I did not feel like I made that many Tunisian friends.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Harassment toward women is a daily occurrence, but only twice was it ever beyond verbal.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
Language acquisition improvement?

I had had previous instruction in French and none in Arabic, but I believe that my skills in both languages improved dramatically.
