Learn a new language! Twi and Swahili through Music, Dance, and Indigenous Leadership This year, the Department of Dance at Laney College is proud to host two programs- GHANA and TANZANIA (Tanganyika). This is an open access study abroad program for students and the community. Students and educators from other colleges are welcome to join. PROGRAM COMPONENTS Urban Dynamics Learn from the people! Music, Dance, Folk Art Language This summer, we will focus heavily on learning African languages-specifically Twi and Swahili as language lessons will be integrated throughout everything we do! Community Leadership What does it mean to be a leader in the community? What are the various roles and responsibilities? How does this relate to your work and interest at home? How do Chiefs maintain peace? What are the roles of a Queen Mother? What are the relationships between the community of children, youth, adults, and elders? How does gender factor into the various aspects of community leadership and development Historical Connections This program focuses heavily on the African cultural connections to US and the Diaspora, Pan Africanism and African Solidarity Movements, African American Repatriation, and more! Arts and Culture Expression GHANA: Dance and Music is an integral part of African cultural traditions. Dance and music classes are open daily for you to immerse yourselves as freely as you want! Sing, play, and move your body! TANZANIA: We will specifically look at the dancing cultures of the Masai and other indigenous cultures. Tailor-Designed Service Learning: Deepen your awareness through experiential service learning! There are a wide variety of options to choose from that will be shared during the orientation sessions. Examples of previous projects include: Helping to build a community health center; setting up the foundation for a school library for a girl’s school; refrigeration projects/energy efficiency monitoring; making beats and music with local artists; teaching arts/sports/music/geography to school children; documenting oral stories with village archive project; creating a choreography with local dancers addressing a social issue of importance–There’s a project waiting for you! Facilitation Experience *This is a full service program guided by practitioners who have led over fifteen cultural connection tours abroad. Your visas, flights, ground logistics, program activities are all coordinated by the program. Participants will enjoy a well-organized program with freedom to explore on your own (guides always available).
