ISA Study Abroad in Valparaíso/Viña del Mar, Chile

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The program was amazing with supportive staff and families. I became independent and content with exploring alone. I became more assertive and self-confident. I was able to ask questions without feeling stupid, which I would encourage future students to do. You are studying abroad to learn more and in order to learn one must ask questions, but do so respectfully!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was manageable; however I took a literature class and had to read Don Quijote. Although it was tedious and mildly difficult, it was a great accomplishment and learning experience. The professor treated us just like any other Chilean student. I also took a cultural dance class which was super fun and interesting. The majority of the professors lectured and encouraged classroom discussion. One professor, in particular, was very concerned with our wellbeing and our understanding of Chilean culture and customs. For this class we often had a "check-in" time. It was encouraging to know that someone was there looking out for you. The grades, if I remember correctly, were on number scale rather than A, B, C, D, F. I know my university found that difficult to understand, but with explanation from ISA staff they accepted my credits. I would recommend reviewing the courses offered at ISA with someone at your university in order to obtain those credits.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The ISA staff in Chile were very supportive of their students, They were always available for conversation and support. The staff included us students in everything. They offered tutoring for difficult classes, or classes a student was having difficulties with.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My host family was fabulous! I still remain in contact with them and refer to them as family. They were very supportive of my learning experience, both academically and culturally. My Chilean mom always had meals ready for me and began including me in food preparation, which I particularly enjoyed. They included me in family and holiday celebrations, educating me on the importance of various cultural events.

* Food:

The food was good, although it wasn't what I was expecting. Over time I began assisting my Chilean family in food preparation and occasionally cooked them an American meal, which they loved. We always had lunch and once together, and the occasional breakfast. They were always wiling to cook a requested meal and invited my American family over for meals while they visited.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I particularly enjoyed the trips ISA provided for the students. I also traveled to Mendoza, the Atacama Desert, and Patagonia with classmates. All the trips were fabulous. I would recommend traveling as much as you can while you're in Chile. Take advantage of your time there, the location, and all the attractions! Although climbing the volcano was awful, it was an accomplishment and an experience that I will never forget. I got involved with my family's church which was a great opportunity and asset to my study abroad experience.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I never had any problems regarding safety. I didn't receive any personal threats. However while I was waiting to obtain my Chilean ID a women sitting next to me tried to pit pocket me to get my camera. That was scary! My family often reminded me of the importance of safety and assisted me whenever necessary. The program also offered trainings regarding saftey and the things we can do as Americans to remain safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

We all had the option to have Chilean conversation partners. We also resided in homes with individuals who were primarily Spanish-speakers, which required our best efforts in Spanish and improved our Spanish-speaking abilities. The classes were also conducted in Spanish, as well as course readings and homework. The majority of people spoke primarily Spanish.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
