Focus on Fun Past Review

ISA Study Abroad in London, England

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned to finally have fun and take it easy. The only reason why I would not do this program again is because I felt that I was not academically challenged, and although people say they don't go abroad for the education part of it, I think it was still important to me to have good classes.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

We provided our own food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Didn't have experiences with Health Care.

* Safety:

We were in what was known as an unsafe part of London, but I felt pretty safe the whole time.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? It varied but I would say I spent around $75-100 each week.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? If you're going to be at Queen Mary, I suggest first making a large order online at Sainsbury or Tesco's website, as they deliver your food to you and they give you large discounts on your first order, so when you need to get all of the basics for your dorm and can't carry everything, having it delivered with a huge discount is really helpful.

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I would have known up front not to focus on academics while I was there because my time could have been best spent doing other things. I also wish I would have focused on exploring London more than trying to get to as many places as possible.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
