Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I took 3 courses, all taught in Spanish at the advanced level. It felt good to not just be learning the language, but actually learning something culture related being taught in the language. It made it easy to speak more fluently after being there for a short period of time. While it was very intimidating at first to learn in another language, the experience was well worth it and it is hard to believe how much I actually learned. Teachers insisted that you become very involved in the culture, even assigning projects to accomplish that, and brought you around the city to show different things that we learned about. Overall amazing experience and learned a lot!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Amazing program, excellent advisors and professors, made a lot of new friends, really felt immersed in the culture of Granada.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Host family was extremely accomodating. Another student and I both lived with a woman and we each got our own bedrooms with a desk, closet space, beds, sheets blankets and pillows. Everything we needed was already there. The woman we lived with also cooked almost all of our meals for us and did our laundry! We were about a 40 minute walk from the university, probably one of the furthest apartments away, but it was not a bad walk by any means. Same goes for night life. But we were able to walk toward whereever we were going and pick up friends on the way so time passed quickly. It is perfectly normal to feel unsafe when in a foreign place but we always followed the general rule of traveling in pairs so I never had any issues.

* Food:

I am an extremely picky eater but I still always found something I liked! I do regret not being a little more adventurous with the things I tried so if you are a little picky just keep in mind that this is a great opportunity so just try new things!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The Alhambra was amazing to tour and all of the weekend trips such as to Sevilla were excellent as well. All activities that were planned were definitely worth it to attend!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

We had a briefing at the beginning of the trip to talk about safety and I don't recall anyone in our group having any issues. There were no vaccines needed for this trip.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

Mostly everyone spoke Spanish at almost all times. I spoke it with my professors, classmates, and the family that I lived with. At first as students we would all speak English together when we were out outside of class, but toward the middle of the trip we began speaking Spanish more often even when in a group of all Americans. We felt more like we belonged and less like tourists when we spoke the language and it helped us become more fluent.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
