A Semester Down Under Past Review

By (Cinematography and Film/Video Production., University of Hartford) for

ISA Study Abroad in Gold Coast, Australia

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The independence I was able to gain from traveling on my own and trying new things is priceless. Meeting people from so many other countries and knowing how they perceive things has really broadened my views. Just traveling here on my own has made me want to go out into the world again and see more. After I graduate I hope to travel more.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The work load could be tough at times with a lot of due dates clumped together, but so long as you put the effort in and don't procrastinate on everything you should be fine. The grading can be tough, it is not something you can really breeze through without a thought.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

In all honesty, I did not go to them at all while I was there. However, I never forgot they were there. Just about every week I got emails reminding me to come and call if I ever needed anything at all. There were study abroad get together lunches throughout the semester. I feel comfortable saying that if I did feel the need to see them, they would have been very helpful and accommodating.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had to buy food and some cleaning stuff but that was it. The area was nice and had a pretty view (in most rooms). The sheets came with the packet. It was about a 15 minute walk from class but that was just because of where all of my classes were. to get on campus was about 5 minutes. 15 minute walk to where you could take a bus to get to just about anywhere (nightlife, convenience stores, mall, etc)

* Food:

Some things were just not the same, the peanut butter was terrible there. Bond had a few food places on campus and I was told that besides being a bit expensive the food was pretty good. Since my place wasnt technically on campus I had to get food for myself because I didnt have a meal plan. I lived off of pasta (no exaggeration)because it was cheap and filling. They did have fast food places like McDonald's and Hungry Jacks aka Burger King. Woolworths was a nice cheap supermarket where I did the majority of my shopping, there were other ones as well. Again buss transport can get you just about anywhere and it is also pretty cheap with a Go Card which you can buy on campus.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

My favorite was definitely scuba diving at the great barrier reef. It was one of the most amazing things that I have ever done. Though I didn't actually do it with my program I also highly enjoyed my Mardi Gras weekend in Sydney. There was a program offered through the school to go down, but me and a few friends did it on our own.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I think for the most part the area I was in was relatively safe. I mean a lot of it is don't be stupid. Follow basic rules of safety like don't go certain places on your own and you should be fine. I took the bus to the mall and to other places on my own plenty and I never felt threatened. The only medical need I had was to renew birth control and they had a doctors office right on campus, though you do need to make sure you make an appointment a few days in advanced.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Well I tried to spend maybe 50-75 dollars a week on food and maybe another 30 or so on personal expenses. Though things can get expensive, there are also plenty of things on sale and if you don't by brand things you can get it even cheaper. At the beginning you are likely to spend the most because you will need to buy basic things like maybe another towel and toilet paper, cleaning supplies, etc. From there so long as you use your stuff carefully and dont go overboard you should be alright.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Food will be your biggest expense most likely and so long as you budget you can also enjoy some of the trips they offer. Each week for about $30 you can do this party thing. If I had to warn anyone of anything it would be how expensive alcohol is, though I don't drink often I know quite a few people within my group got themselves into trouble dropping money on alcohol because they weren't 21 and got overly excited about being able to buy it. Another thing is that Taxis are extremely expensive so if you know that you might need to get one make sure you have the funds for it.

Comments: It was very interesting and the teacher was very knowledgeable and always well prepared. I have always been big on participation so I didn't participate and more or less. This was my favorite class while I was there.
Credit Transfer Issues: Not that I know of, but I don't think anything will be a problem

Comments: Some weeks were more interesting than others, but it was cool to learn about films made in the country I was studying in. We did end up taking a field trip to a place where one of the films we talked about was shot. It is always interesting to watch something and then see where it was filmed. Since there were only two students in the class it was less like a class and more like a casual get together with film discussion, screening, and some grades.
