About

Situated along the Magdalena River and known as the "Golden Gate to Colombia," Barranquilla (population approx. 2 million) is a vibrant and cosmopolitan Caribbean port city in northern Colombia. Each year the city hosts the Carnaval de Barranquilla - one of the biggest carnivals in the world. As the heart of the Colombian Caribbean that introduced the world to cumbia and other influential musical stylings, this fun-loving and friendly city is filled with a unique rhythm and pulse year round.

Barranquilla started its life as "Colombia's port" in the early 1600s. Through the years, Barranquilla has welcomed people from all over the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. This diverse population has given the city a unique and friendly feel and a fascinating cultural identity.

Students studying abroad in Colombia will grow to love the "eternal summer" weather and the Caribbean lifestyle that helps make Barranquilla the unique and vibrant city that it is. Students will study at one of the best universities in the Caribbean region - the Universidad del Norte where they will benefit from a wonderful international program that provides students ample opportunity to immerse themselves in the campus and Colombian culture. The UniNorte provides the ideal study abroad setting with opportunities to take courses with locals, study Spanish in Colombia, and even participate in university organized volunteer activities so that students can give back to the community they will have come to call home.
