ISA Study Abroad in Auckland, New Zealand

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The experience was way worthwhile and I miss New Zealand so much that my heart aches when I look at my photos. It is a part of me and in my future I plan on backpacking the rest of the country I didn't have time to see. I understand so much more after three months in another country, all my problems here before I left seem so small and unimportant now that I realize what the world has to offer. It changed me for the better.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I had an internship experience in Marine Biology and learned a lot about the research involved in sediment sorting to figure out the diversity in different types of ocean sediment. Dr. Steve O'Shea did an excellent job teaching us how to do the lab and field work. The experience was very unique and helpful toward my career goals.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Australearn did an excellent job matching me up with an internship that fit my interests and everything went smoothly the entire three months. The adivsors where always quick to answer questions and provide advice if needed.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Living in Auckland was like living in any regular city in the United States. It was definitely a lot safer though! Everyone was very helpful to lead us to the food store and such. The night life was something I'll always miss because it was so much fun! The apartment seemed kind of cheap but I lived with another american in the program and we made it home to us. The kitchen had stuff for us to cook and the bus would take us to the food store when we needed groceries. The front desk always gave us what we needed for example a TV and an extra couch for guests. It was walking distance from work and starbucks which was a huge plus.

* Food:

I never tried New Zealand lamb or any meat actually except chicken but the italian restaurants were my favorite and they had places like burger king, pita pit and chain fast food places that the US has. Anywhere in Auckland is great for dining especially if you take the boat to Whaiheke Island. They have wine tours and great food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I traveled every weekend and it was very cheap and easy to get from city to city and the hostels all have brochures of the things to do. I went white water rafting, I won a bungy swing from 160 meters at a pub crawl raffle one night, I louged down a snowy mountain, went ATVing through the woods, went on a seal coast safari, dining at the Sky Tower in Auckland and zorbing down a hill in Rotorua. The country is amazing and I wish I could live there. The Maori culture was so interesting and the Haka before the All Blacks Rugby game was the coolest thing I've ever heard. New Zealand is very close to my heart after this experience.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

New Zealand was very safe and the people were so friendly and kind. Australearn provides you with health cards before you leave and the doctors in NZ are free anyways!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
