Cusco is the oldest city on the American continent with a history of continuous habitation for more than 3000 years and is the location of the birth of the great Incan empire. Situated at the base of the Andes (at 11,000 feet!), it is the gateway to the Sacred Valley and to Machu Picchu (one of the Seven Wonders of the World). Peruvian culture is steeped in history and heavily influenced by the Incan Empire and Spanish colonization. History has left its mark on Cusco, from the 15th century baroque cathedrals that dot the city, to the Quechua language (the language of the Incas) still spoken by many locals today. Cusco is filled with charming cobblestone streets, stone buildings made by the Incas and exciting nightlife and cafes. In short, it is a perfect blend of the old and the new. Financial Aid is available for eligible students. IPSL also accepts AmeriCorps Segal Education awards. 

 

IPSL's participants get to know Peruvian life, from the inside, by living with a Peruvian family. Homestays offer the opportunity to make life-long friends as well as gain higher proficiency in the Spanish language. IPSL matches participants to the type of household they prefer. Most meals are included which makes IPSL participants feel welcome and part of the family. 

 

Customize the program to suit YOUR interests, goals, and budget. Academic courses are available (for credit or no credit) and are conducted in small groups with lots of good discussion, excursions (The Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu!), lectures, and hands-on learning opportunities. Volunteer service will allow you to make great connections and understand the challenges Cuzqueños and other Peruvians face. 

Courses may include (all courses are taught in English):

• Intro to COSA (Community Organizing and Social Activism) and COSA in Peru
• Indigenous Knowledge, Health, and Human Rights in Peru 
• Environmental Justice as a Social Movement
