Overall Experience
I was able to meet new people and learn about new cultures. I was able to travel to watch a football match in London, ski the alps, skydive in Italy, cook local Viennese cuisine, and go to mass at Stephansdom Cathedral. I gained independence and confidence and loved my time abroad! - Boston College View Entire Review
I gained a lot of new insight and perspective on how to think about certain things, such as other cultures, being immersed into something totally different than what you are accustomed to, and so much more. - University of Iowa View Entire Review
So much more independence and confidence, extremely worthwhile - Brandeis University View Entire Review
I learned to get outside of my comfort zone and explore new things. It was definitely worthwhile. - Trinity University View Entire Review
Specifically from my art history classes I learned a lot, especially about Austrian art and museums. I became a lot more sure of myself and more independent, specifically from traveling alone. I am less of a shy person now, since I was put into a whole new country not knowing anyone, I could not afford to be shy and not go out a... - University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign View Entire Review
Past Review Such A Blessing!
It's impossible to write everything I learned and how I changed in one paragraph! My time abraod was such a blessing and I would do it again in a heart beat. Being abroad is a great experience and is definitely worthwhile. It's hard to explain everything I learned, but I think in general a gained more confidence and knowledge about a different culture. - Brandeis University View Entire Review
It was more than worthwhile! Going abroad more than anything opened my mind to the fact they are so many other experiences and opportunities available to me I knew nothing about previously. Looking back, I feel like I used to live in a little America bubble and knew little to nothing about other countries as much as I hate to ad... - University of Redlands View Entire Review
Beyond learning a new language I was able to take lessons with a world-class opera singer, I learned how to be confident in a strange city, I learned how to travel well by myself and with others, and overall I learned what is really important to me instead of what I thought was important. Definitely worthwhile. - Providence College View Entire Review
I learned a lot about myself and gained a lot of confidence in myself. I also learned a lot about a new culture and the vast world outside of the teeny tiny United States. I also got the travel bug. I wanna travel more!! - Providence College View Entire Review
I gained a broader aspect of the world. It was certainly worthwhile, as I had the opportunity to travel within Austria as well as to bordering countries, and learn about the various cultures. I also made a lot of new friends! - Brandeis University View Entire Review
A student studying abroad with IES Abroad: Vienna - IES Abroad in Vienna

IES Abroad Vienna’s Music program was an AMAZING experience! There is no city in the world that has classical music like Vienna: concerts and operas every night with the best performers in the world, along with student tickets and cheap standing room tickets!! The music classes offered at the center (which is in a palace!!!) wer... - Northwestern University View Entire Review
Yes it was, Vienna is such a beautiful city full of young people, great music, food, educational venues, and so many things to do in such a short time. Anyone that goes will find something that they love about Vienna, being the music, churches, parks, psychology, food, health care, people... - Simmons College View Entire Review
It was everything I dreamed it would be and more. I was able to take private trumpet lessons with a legend and master teacher, was constantly inspired by some of the finest musicians in the world on a weekly basis, gained a lot of independence, made new life-long friends, and was able to be the first family member to return to t... - Ithaca College View Entire Review
I became a more confident, more mature musician. I fell in love with another language that I felt confident in my abilities to speak to strangers with, and I made a home in a foreign country. - Indiana University - Bloomington View Entire Review
Vienna is a second home for me now, even if IES wasn't totally the program I was looking for, I still had an amazing time. - Trinity University View Entire Review
Past Review Step Into Europe
I learned independence, the ability to think globally, and a thirst to learn more about the rest of this massive world! It was worth it because IES and Vienna allowed me to explore a city in depth and yet get a chance to travel on my own to other areas of Europe. - University of Minnesota View Entire Review
Past Review A Great Year
Friends, cultural experience, travel, language. Yes - Wellesley College View Entire Review
I learned my passion for languages (I really miss hearing other languages in stores or on the streets) and I learned to become much more independent. I learned how to navigate public transportation as well as traveling to other countries without assistance. I gained a new perspective on American culture and on European culture... - Trinity University View Entire Review
If someone told me I could go back tomorrow, I would! It was the best few months of my life! My German language improved significantly, I made many friends, and I was able to travel to many places I never thought I would! It was a great opportunity and I would highly recommend it. - Stonehill College View Entire Review
In addition to taking five classes and an internship, I was able to travel to many places I'd been dreaming of visiting and I learned more from the children in my Austrian classroom than I could have done studying German in an American classroom. - Providence College View Entire Review
Past Review Life: Redefined
The importance of meeting other people and hearing their stories. - Providence College View Entire Review
I would highly recommend the teaching internships offered, where you go into Austrian schools and learn firsthand about the average life of a person who may not be too much younger than you and come to understand the similarities and differences between your life and theirs. - University of Rochester View Entire Review

We’d like to let you in on a little secret: Vienna is extraordinary. Quickly—gather your things and study there before more students realize what a hidden gem it is. • Vienna - European Society & Culture: Offering both English- and German-taught courses, the IES Abroad Vienna European Society & Culture program allows you to study the culture, history, business, and politics of a region that continues to play a major role on the world stage. You can also enroll in an internship or field experience, which includes time spent working at your placement in addition to an academic seminar that helps you contextualize what you’re learning.

  • Vienna - Music: Home to an astounding number of legendary composers—from Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven to Brahms, Mahler, and Schoenberg—Vienna maintains an incredible richness of musical culture to this day. The world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Musikverein, and the Staatsoper are just a few of the many leading institutions that help make Vienna a true “city of music”—and make it the perfect location for an engaging study of Music History and Performance. The IES Abroad Vienna Music Program is ideal for students majoring or minoring in Music, and offers you the opportunity to participate in a wide selection of courses focusing on Music and European culture and society. The program is organized in conjunction with the Vienna European Society & Culture Program.

  • Vienna Summer - Music History & Performance: Located in the heart of Europe, Vienna is a city of about 1.8 million inhabitants that has, since its founding in the 3rd century, served as a bridge between a myriad of cultures. As an important crossroads between North and South, East and West, the city became a natural melting pot for new ideas. Out of this cultural richness has emerged a wealth of artistic accomplishments and innovative thinking—a heritage that we explore in our summer programs. Vienna has been home to many of history's greatest composers, from Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven to Brahms, Mahler, and Schoenberg. To this day, the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Musikverein, and the Staatsoper continue to help make Vienna a true "city of music."

  • Vienna Summer - Psychology: As the famous psychologist Carl Rogers once said, "This is where all the trouble started!" In Vienna, the birthplace of psychoanalysis and home to Sigmund Freud and numerous other legendary psychologists, you can experience both the history and practice of psychology from a unique vantage point. Explore the richness of this city’s past and present in an academic environment specially designed for the student of Psychology. The program is organized into two topics: Psychology & Society, and Health Psychology & Communication. Students examining Psychology & Society learn about the emergence of psychology in Vienna and consider closely how different methodologies today both reflect and challenge Freud's legacy. Students studying Health Psychology & Communication take a more practical approach as they explore the field of counseling, and develop skills in listening and empathy.

  • Vienna - Summer Internship: Enjoy the history, rich culture, and professional opportunities that the political and economic capital of Austria has to offer.
