About

The Duke Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO-U) offers a four-week, one-course program at Bogazici University in Istanbul. Students from all disciplines are welcome.

Bogazici University is a strikingly beautiful campus that sits on a hill by the Bosphorus, the body of water that divides the continents of Asia and Europe. Istanbul is an incredibly rich city in its multi-cultural history, arts, and contemporary life. Students have the opportunity to explore the city and other regions of Turkey.

Students take one course, worth one Duke unit, equivalent to four semester credit hours at other U.S. institutions. The course is titled
Culture and Politics in Turkey and the Middle East. It examines cultural identity and politics in Turkey and modern Middle East. Using Istanbul as a classroom, the course considers how representations of the Middle East are contested and gendered, analyzing such icons as "veiled women" and "terrorist men" and political implications of such representations. Topics include emergence of new social movements and paradoxes of secularism, Islamism, globalization, and neoliberalism in various settings.

Students are housed in dormitories at
Bogazici University and participate in excursions to various locations outside of Istanbul.
