About

Besides being a popular tourist spot, Ireland is strategically important too. One of only two European countries whose official language is English, it is a natural bridge for Americans to reach Europe. Ireland’s influence in Europe is also disproportionate to it’s size - having a population of only 4.5 million (about the size of Louisiana or Kentucky), it is a member state of the European Union. Perhaps more important than that is the Irish diaspora: that is the spread of Irish people around the world. Being the people of an Island, the Irish love to travel, and over the centuries, have settled far and wide. There are nearly 45 million people of Irish decent in Canada and the US, another 18 million spread out throughout the rest of Europe, and 3 million more in Australia and New Zealand. Perhaps this is why, in centuries past, Ireland was among the great senders of the gospel to other peoples.
