About

Students have five programs to choose from at the University of Cape Town: Engineering & Computer Science; Humanities, Social Sciences & Psychology; Business & Economics; Sciences & the Environment; and Identity, Politics, & History of South Africa. Each program includes 1-2 core courses, a regional course, and 1-3 electives. Students have the option of registering for up to three social groups on the UCT campus and joining one of the university’s sports clubs. UCT hosts over a hundred social groups dedicated to a variety of activities, religions, beliefs, cultural backgrounds, and interests. CEA provides students with ample opportunity to experience the best of Cape Town and South Africa through complementary cultural activities and excursions to important sites such as Robben Island and !Kwa Ttu San Village. CEA makes sure your housing, health, safety, social engagement, and other needs are taken care of. Giving you the best possible study abroad experience is our top priority.

For CEA students who seek a global learning experience.

$400-$3000

Deadlines:
April 10 (Summer), May 10 (Fall), November 15 (Spring)

Guidelines/Requirements:
GPA: 2.5; Scholarship Application and Recommendation Form (found on the CEA website); Letter of Recommendation; An original 400-500 word essay reflecting on the following quote and describing why it is important to gain “a new way of seeing things” and how you will achieve this while studying abroad: "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." – Henry Miller

For CEA students who are interested in pursuing a career with global ties.

$400-$2000

Deadlines:
April 10 (Summer), May 10 (Fall), November 15 (Spring)

Guidelines/Requirements:
GPA: 3.0; Scholarship Application and Recommendation Form (both found on the CEA website); Letter of Recommendation; An original 400-500 word essay reflecting on the following quote and describing your career goals and how the skills and attributes you hope to gain while studying abroad will support your professional endeavors: "All major hiring companies need global citizens. Global sensitivities, global perspective, global insight, along with maturity and a capacity for risk-taking, are exactly the skills every major organization is looking for – in every industry." – Kevin Gill, Global Director of Staffing for Honeywell

For CEA students who demonstrate a high need for additional funding.

$500-$1000

Deadlines:
April 10 (Summer), May 10 (Fall), November 15 (Spring)

Guidelines/Requirements:
GPA: 2.5; Scholarship Application and Recommendation Form (found on CEA website); Letter of Recommendation; and Financial Need Scholarship Form (Found on CEA website -- work with the financial aid office at your home institution to complete the form)

For CEA students who excel academically.

$750-$3,000

Deadlines:
April 10 (Summer), May 10 (Fall), November 15 (Spring)

Guidelines/Requirements:
GPA: 3.7; Scholarship Application and Recommendation Form (both found on CEA website); and an original 400-500 word essay reflecting on the following quote and describing how you look forward to ‘learning, unlearning, and relearning’ and how you will accomplish your learning/unlearning goals during your study abroad experience: "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." – Alvin Toffler

For CEA students from diverse backgrounds or students who have had a personal experience with diversity

$400-$2,000

GPA: 2.5; Scholarship Application & Recommendation Form (both found on the CEA website); Letter of Recommendation; and an original 400-500 word essay reflecting on the following quote and describing how your experience with diversity has prepared you for your study abroad experience: "Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends." – Maya Angelou

CEA has partnered with the Institute of International Education's Generation Study Abroad, a five-year initiative that strives to double the number of U.S. college students who study abroad, to offer this scholarship to CEA students

$400-$750

Deadlines:
April 10 (Summer), May 10 (Fall), November 15 (Spring)

Guidelines/Requirements:
GPA: 2.5; Scholarship Application & Recommendation Form (both found on CEA website); Letter of Recommendation; and an original 400-500 word essay reflecting on how you plan to utilize your international experience to connect your home community and other international communities before, during, and after your time abroad.
