Independence Day is upon us and the summer season is in full swing! Whether you’re studying abroad or at home, it’s definitely time to celebrate with food, friends, family and fireworks (the four essential ‘F’s of course).
But wait! What’s a college student to do after the biggest summer holiday ends?

Merhaba (Translation:Hello) from Istanbul! After AIFS’s quick excursion to Athens, the 17 of us in the program made our way to Istanbul to begin orientation/registration for our 7 weeks of studies at Boğaziçi University. While about half of us are here for history, many people are taking classes as diverse as sociology, business, marketing, psychology, literature, philosophy, and of course, Turkish.
It seems like just yesterday we were running Abroad101 from a basement-turned-office or from the bustling corners of One Marina Park. Now, we’ve officially been in our new office for one whole week! Last Monday, several of our staff packed themselves into a small UHaul and happily lugged office furniture along with other goodies (think exercise bike) across Boston. We’re now officially located at 107 South St, Boston MA!
The Dragon Boat Festival, a national holiday in China, is set to be held this weekend throughout the country! For the Chinese, this day means no work or school, eating rice dumplings and watching thousands of people race intricately designed dragon boats on the nearest body of water.

This week, and today especially, the country of Greece has been in the news. Another general election is coming up and it’s set to determine much of Greece’s immediate fate. From a study abroad perspective, this means a lot for what an experience in this country will be like. Yet difficult circumstances within the country, does not mean a study abroad experience will be difficult. Beautiful Bali Beaches....
I recently came back from a week in Bali. I wasn’t sure about going at first since Bali after all is a third world country. Two American girls in a third world country? That just made me nervous. My American roommate, Allie, convinced me to go. I figured when else can I go to Bali this cheap? I later discovered that there are actually quite a few cheap holiday packages for Bali available through Expedia. They make it simple to order a hotel at the last minute, too. I got lucky and found a good deal this time, but if you plan on checking out Bali in the future, then you should definitely consider checking out the affordable hotel deals available online. They’ve pretty much got every place in the world covered, and you might be inspired to travel abroad just by browsing through some of their deals.
I know I’d never fly there from the US. Now, it just made sense that I HAD to go. We first flew to Perth because it was cheaper to fly to Bali from there than it was to fly from the Gold Coast. Below please see our adventures for the first few days in Bali. Check out the second half next week!

This week I found myself in China!
DAY 1:
Our ship docked in Hong Kong. Before this trip every time I thought of Hong Kong I just thought of Dad flying there for business and bringing home tamagotchis, those things were fun! So the first day we walked all over, we went up to Victoria’s Peak and had a great view of the whole city. It was like New York in the sense that is was crowded, traffic, busy, big, lots of flashing billboards…that whole ‘big city’ scene…just in a foreign language. Continue reading
