Norwich: A Creative Writing Haven Past Review

By (English and American Literatures, Middlebury College) - abroad from 01/08/2014 to 06/05/2014 with

University of East Anglia: Norwich - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I went to UEA specifically for its creative writing reputation--they did not disappoint. There is an extremely supportive creative writing community there, and if you seek them out, there are many opportunities for writers. The school itself is progressive and active, and students are easy going.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Living in Norwich is much cheaper than living in London, but the USD to British Pound exchange rate is certainly not ideal.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Professors / classes
  • Proximity to London
* What could be improved?
  • The study abroad office at UEA was often more confusing than helpful. There was poor communication among their staff and I arrived there to find I had been enrolled (and therefore billed) incorrectly and had a nightmare of a time getting into the classes I wanted.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? UEA is nothing like Cambridge or Oxford-- it is a very new school and doesn't have the same traditions of older English universities.
