University College London (UCL): London - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I'm ready to graduate and get a job... school's a drag no matter where you are in the world.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

There's no doubt that everyone at UCL (students and professors) was highly intelligent--the general interest in fostering an academic community and discussion, however, was strikingly absent... it was very clear that people were there for themselves (students for a degree, professors for their research).

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administration was extremely disorganized, especially when it came to affiliate student policies and deadlines.... information was constantly lacking, conflicting, or administered way too late. My final easy portfolio due date was only made know four days in advance.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Very nice if you can pay.

* Food:

I never ate on campus or through the school's dining program, but there's plenty of options throughout the city.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

London's such an international city that it's hard to really feel like an outsider.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Overall I felt very safe. Theft, however, is extremely prevalent in student areas. I had a friend who had her cell phone ripped from her hand right outside of her dorm. This is a common occurrence in the city, even within otherwise considered "safe" neighborhoods.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

London is REALLY expensive no matter how you cut it.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? at least 150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Living in the islington area is pretty expensive rent-wise, but you'll have more flexibility in affordable food options

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The flexibility of the course schedule
  • the independence
  • separation of campus and housing
* What could be improved?
  • organization and distribution of affiliate student dates and deadlines
  • social opportunities for foreign students within the school community
  • budgeting/financial planning resources
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It would've been awesome to know about different housing options beyond those which the university offered

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
