Sant'Anna Institute-Sorrento Lingue (SASL) organizes semester and summer study abroad programs for American universities in Sorrento, Italy. While studying at Sant'Anna Institute- Sorrento Lingue, students not only enrich their collegiate experience but immerse themselves in Italian language and culture. Service Learning in Sorrento

As part of its academic programs organized in partnership with American universities, Sant'Anna Institute-Sorrento Lingue organizes service learning projects being practical and very useful for the host community. These are projects that allow students to apply what they learn in the classroom, while testing themselves professionally, and, at the same time, to provide a service to the city hosting them. This year Sant'Anna Institute has involved 18 students of architecture, interior design and business - from one of its partner universities: Alfred State College (SUNY) - to re-develop the port area of "Marina Piccola" (Sorrento). The project's aims were to increase the attractiveness of the area and to create a tourist attraction that was economically active all year round, multi-functional and sustainable. The project, called "VISUALISING A NEW FUTURE FOR MARINA PICCOLA - IMMAGINARE UN NUOVO FUTURO PER MARINA PICCOLA" was presented to the citizens on April 15th, at the Town Hall in Sorrento, by the Mayor of Sorrento, Mr. Giuseppe Cuomo, the Director of the Sant'Anna Institute, Cristiana Panicco, the President of the Alfred State College, Dr. John M. Anderson, and Arch. Fabio Fiorentino - who assisted the students in realizing the projects - and prof. Jeffrey Johnston and Dianne Tuzzolino, students coordinators. More specifically, the business students have designed a new commercial space to promote Sorrento, in accordance with the "triple bottom line": social, environmental and economic sustainability. Students of architecture and interior design have analyzed the physical characteristics and views of the port, creating some specific projects for restructuring the most ancient elements of Marina Piccola. The purpose was to create a lively and welcoming tourist attraction, without altering the historical function of the current port. The students' ideas were very appreciated by the audience, including several architects and engineers invited to the event. Mayor Cuomo thanked the students for their contribution, as well as Sant'Anna Institute for the opportunity given to participate actively in the development of the territory hosting them for a semester. The Mayor also announced that in the next months the area of Marina Piccola will be affected by extensive restructuring works which will take partially into consideration the ideas suggested by the students.
