I grew exponentially and maybe a lot of it has to do with how much I disliked my program, but I would never take back all of the experiences I have gained and all of the things I have seen. Even if CYA was a terrible program, Greece itself was stunning. view full review

Greece: Amazing, Exciting, and Wonderful Experience

The workload was definitely manageable. The grading system is more or less similar to my home college. Teaching methods were overall the same, except for my language class in modern Greek. My teacher's methods were different, such as going out onto the street in the middle of class and practicing greek with them, which i though was very beneficial. I would do this again in a heartbeat. It was eye-opening to move to such a different culture, and I grew a lot from this experience. All the financial and political turmoil Greece is currently going through gave me a new perspective on my own culture and how the US fits into global politics. view full review

A Time of Transition-Within Athens and Myself

The focus of this organization is to not only teach in the classroom but also take you out and see what you're learning about. Ancient Greek history and archeology meant holding class at the Parthenon or the Agora. A class about the environment took us into the mountains around Athens. This program is sooo much fun!! But it's honestly what you make of it. It takes a lot of motivation to stay caught up and engaged in your studies while also exploring Greece, the rest of Europe, and more. I think any type of student would benefit, as long as you are willing to do the work, you will love CYA. If you have any inkling about going abroad, don't ponder on it, just do it. It was probably the best decision I ever made. view full review

YES it was worth it. I made sure of it. I loved Athens and I am extremely passionate about classical studies. I was just disappointed that College Year in Athens was not there to help me on my journey. It was poorly run and organized. But I had an incredible time. I want Tulane students to go to Athens but perhaps there are different programs they can use. view full review

I wish that my expectations of the students had matched reality. The program itself was very good and rewarding, but the students and their behavior detracted from my experience. My study abroad experience was fantastic. I absolutely loved it and I am so glad I decided to go to Greece. I'm a classics major so it was really rewarding to go to Athens, where so many things happened in the classical world. Absolutely! My only regret is not staying longer. I am a better human and a better American for going abroad. I learned about family and hospitality from the Greeks. As bad as things are over there, the warmth they something they don't lack. I highly recommend this program. GO CYA!! view full review

My study abroad experience was definitely worthwhile. I made many great friends from all different backgrounds (two of my best friends were a biochem major and a finance major). I almost feel as if I am an honorary Greek. I learned the importance of taking time to smell the flowers, essentially, and that Greeks do what they want when they want. I'm glad I did it and would do it again, even though I missed my home institution greatly. I made amazing friends and had so many different interactions with different cultures that I would never have met otherwise. I have more confidence in myself and in different situations. view full review

Save your money. You will need it for food and other expenses. Also pack lightly. Greece is not flat and rolling luggage does not move easily on the roads or sidewalks. I took a backpack and side bag and it proved time and again to be the smart move. Hand sanitizers and lotions come in hand in the dry climate. Sunblock for those who burn easily. view full review

Save a lot of money and try to travel every weekend. See the islands, mainland, and maybe the nearby countries (Istanbul and Prague were cheap and great to visit). Live cheaply when you can: cook for yourself and don't spend money in the city, then you'll have plenty for travel. I learned a lot about myself -I feel like I've matured and now look a life differently. It is very rewarding to know that you can live independently in a foreign country successfully.
