As a visiting student at Rhodes, you will have the opportunity to participate in the Student Volunteer Program which matches students with one of the local community-based organizations that run projects in the under resourced parts of Grahamstown.

Extremely. Being thrown into a culture and having close to no background in the country before hand, I was forced to integrate and make friends with people with completely different backgrounds than that which I have been used to. South Africa was an eye opening experience that prepared me for future challenges.

My cultural awareness was dramatically shaped by my abroad experience. Seeing how much of the world lives (in the 3rd world) is eye opening and an important reality check. Gaining insight in our world and personal humility were at the forefront this experience. Workload was generally substantially less than I had in the states, but the content was no less dense/worthwhile. Professors were excellent overall (with one exception). Also, 70-80% of the grade is in the final exam, which is taken in the morning in a gym. A silly system if you ask me; it's why a large number of student there coast through the semester and then prompt... view full review
