Interstudy in Cape Town Changed My Life!

There was a wide variety of courses at the University of Cape Town that I was interested in. There were great courses in the subjects that I wanted to take, such as African history, literature, politics. However, the classes are very large and there is not a great amount of incentive to go to class. I found that it was much easier to pass at UCT, but more difficult harder ... view full review

UCT is a very challenging school for most mainstream courses. I took some geographic information systems (GIS) and environmental science courses and found them to be very challenging (especially with the different style of grading). Most local students say that they will fail classes from time to time and barely passing is not as frowned upon as American students are used ... view full review

The university was hard for an abroad school if you take actual classes. If your taking African Dance and a bunch of electives you will be fine, but if you take classes for your major remember that UCT is in the Top 125 schools in the world. view full review

There was a huge gap between my Calculus 2 class here in the States, and the next course, Multivariable Calculus class which i attempted to take at the University of Cape Town. I was struggling from the beginning but tried to get myself caught up, the problem was that the tutorial session had over 30 people in it so there was almost no 1 on 1 time with the teacher or TA's... view full review

I wish I could have stayed longer. I wish I had hung out with more South Africans. I wish I hadn't offended so many people with my ignorance. I wish I had attended more class and studied harder. I wish I had asked for more help. South Africa is complicated and beautiful. view full review

I think this program was extremely worthwhile and a great experience. There were minor bumps in the road, but that is to be expected of any time spent in another country. The staff was helpful, and the outings that Interstudy took us on were worthwhile. I absolutely loved Cape Town, and am so glad that I chose to spend five months there. view full review

My study abroad experience was the best, and it a lot of ways I think I really got lucky meeting my group of locl friends. They were always so eager to show me around and we all enjoy traveling and driving so we would take drives to all these places. Not only did I have a phenomenal time, I also learned all about those who live in Africa and go to travel and see a new part of the world. If you're looking for an intellectually stimulating abroad experience, Cape Town may not be the place for you. I look back on my time at UCT as a sort of vacation. School was a breeze, and I was able to go to the beach every day. South Africa was beautiful, full of culture, and an absolute blast. But I'm not sure if wasting a semester at UCT was worth it. I spent a lot more time on my academic work than I had expected to, but I really enjoyed it. Some classes were not very hard at all, but two were pretty challenging and one was especially time-consuming. There is no way to describe the experience and do it justice. If you are on the fence about going abroad, just go. Of course it will be worthwhile. When during college will you have another opportunity to see things completely outside of what you have made them to be?
