The beautiful, modern main campus of the University of Fort Hare is situated in Alice, on the historic site of Fort Hare, which played a crucial role in the advancement of the Eastern Cape in the mid-19th Century. Alice is a small rural town about two miles from the campus across the Tyhume River and 70 miles from East London, the closest city and airport. East London is at the northern end of the 300-kilometer stretch of Sunshine Coast, renowned for it's beautiful unpolluted and un-crowded beaches. There are many nature reserves as well as other eco-tourist attractions in the vicinity of Alice. Situated in the nearby Amatola Mountains, Hogsback is a magical hiking spot. The landscape is lush, green and dotted with beautiful waterfalls. The Afromontane forest hosts the Samango “Blue” Monkey and the critically endangered Cape Parrot. If you are seeking a small-town rural environment, with most activities on campus, Alice provides the ideal setting.
