SOAS London Study Abroad Experience

The British system takes a more "self-study" approach than the American system. Students are given syllabuses with long reading lists and they are expected to come prepared to lecture and tutorials to discuss the readings. There are few assignments but a lot of reading. So it is all about how self-disciplined and motivated you are. view full review

Yes, my program was definitely worthwhile. I gained experience in a very different academic milieu, one that I enjoyed greatly. I plan to go back to the UK to pursue further education, because I have benefited from the more open environment that prevails in its institutions. SOAS is incredible for the areas in which it specializes, and any student with similar academic aspirations would benefit most from being there. It would also be a great introduction into a new field or a new language for anyone unfamiliar with Oriental and African studies. view full review

In general my expectation of my abroad experience was that I would learning nothing substantial and that I would "play" a lot. However, I was quite surprised at the amount and quality of information I was learning. A student most interested in Asian or African politics and economics should consider studying at SOAS. However in London one has to make great effort to have a social life as campus life is vastly different from the strong communities we have here in the US. view full review

You really have to take care of yourself- though the programme gives you food and housing, you don't realise what you have to buy yourself... bring toilet paper, because Dinwiddy doesn't include it in your rent. view full review

Most of the courses were year long courses, and since I was there for term 2 and 3 I was left in the middle without much help catching up to what was already taught. Furthermore there was little incentive to keep up with the work since I only needed to write 2 essays for the class and attendance was not mandatory. Yes, completely worthwhile. It made me more relaxed about my future, not to be so stressed out. To just learn and enjoy. Amazing environment, very liberal university with students ranging from such diverse backgrounds. I feel like i matured more during this year than I have in the past three. Which is great, considering graduation is only a year away. view full review

I have always been an independent person but I think studying abroad gave me some extra tools; for example, I am more familiar with dealing with foreign offices and immigration issues. I am also a better traveler after visiting Europe. I'm also a more well-rounded student after experiencing the British system.
