Students in San José can study at the Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR ), located two miles from downtown San José in San Pedro. UCR is recognized nationally and internationally for its superior academic achievements and is the oldest university in the country. More than 30,000 students attend the university, which includes a large international student population. The nation’s respect for the environment is apparent on the campus. Lush green areas give students peaceful places to gather, socialize and study. San Pedro is a lively area during the day and night, characterized primarily by the university community. Bookstores, shopping, coffee shops, restaurants and entertainment centers all abound in the campus area.

As a whole the academic experience was satisfying and helpful. The first Spanish course instructor my class had was not interested in changing the syllabus to accommodate the needs of the students. It was frustrating attending class and not learning anything. As this persisted the class as a whole took steps to remove the teacher and bring in someone who was more intereste... view full review

My experience was totally worth while. I did things there that I would have never done before. For example I went with one other girl traveling around Nicaragua, which could of been very sketchy, but I am proud to say we had no problems.
