Grenoble: The Perfect Size City for the Authentic French Experience

French schooling is a lot different than the typical American experience. Expectations are much more implicit than explicit so the student must work hard to stay on top of the course work. Evaluation is also much harsher in comparison to American grading. Perfection is nearly impossible in the eyes of the French. There is always room for improvement. The workload was unexpectedly light and the teaching methods were slightly different, but I learned a lot because of how much studying I did. They do not give much homework or projects because they expect that you will study. That is how you get ahead. view full review

API Grenoble: lack of air conditioning was the only bad thing

Let me clear this up, API (the program you go through) is impeccable. the leaders of it in Grenoble, the way they take care of you before and after, the people in the program with you, and the families they set you up with are all amazing and i couldnt have asked for anything better. The teaching methods were by far the most effective in any foreign language class I have had. Because French was the only common language we had in the classroom everything was in French. If a student did not understand something the teacher explained in french. The only issue I had was with the grading system. Like I said before, the grading system and manner of assessing grades are quite different and can be stressful. (I found just a single test at the end of the year to be a lot of pressure.) The due dates of things are also a lot more ambiguous; it's more the student's responsibility to stay on top of things in the manner that they should. The academics for the Grenoble intensive month were challenging but not overwhelming. They did not detract from weekend vacations or night outings, but this does not mean you do not have to put time into the homeworks.
