Florence, located in the renowned region of Tuscany, is situated on the banks of the Arno River, surrounded by the rolling hills of the Italian countryside. To study and live in Florence is to walk the streets of Dante, Brunelleschi, Giotto and many other contributors to the arts and humanities. Here students can soak up the culture and history of this great city while learning Italian and studying in buildings from centuries past. Established in the 9th century BC, Florence is perhaps best known as one of the birthplaces of the Italian Renaissance at the end of the 14th Century. It is a city that welcomes visitors, scholars, artists and students to walk her streets, relive past discoveries in the arts and sciences, and glimpse the rich history that permeates every inch of the city. Students in Florence experience the city with others from around the world who share a passion for learning.

API students in Florence study at Lorenzo de’ Medici - The Italian International Institute (LdM). The campus is primarily located in a 13th century AD convent in the heart of Florence. The facilities have been modernized and the city surroundings offer students a
canvas on which to learn, create and challenge themselves in their academic and personal endeavors. LdM offers students a wide selection of courses from The School of Arts and Sciences, The School of Creative Arts, The School of Design and The School of Italian Language and Culture. At LdM, students can take classes in studio arts, liberal arts and humanities, and international business, among other disciplines. Founded in 1973, LdM offers the opportunity to study under experienced instructors in the unparalleled surroundings of Florence. I was able to communicate with people of a different language and I learned how to be an adult. If I wanted something to happen, I would have to make it happen. You learn how to budget your money, react in scary situation, and be flexible if your travel arrangements did not work out. view full review

The academics overall were really good. The grading system was fair. My workload was managable.Compared to my home university, the work was a lot easier and I was less stressed out. Althought grading systems were different, they are both good. view full review

I spent maybe 3-4 hours on homework per week in Florence, Italy as opposed to over 2-3 hours per day at my home college in Pennsylvania. I really enjoyed the classes as well. Most of my classes were small enough to warrant more discussion and informal learning in Italy. The grading, also, was reasonable and not at all a source of stress. view full review

I am thankful and feel lucky that I was able to spend 4 months outside of the US. This experience has opened my eyes to the world and has allowed me to learn so much about myself. The institution seemed pretty laid back. The work load was average, but the material was hands on and incorporated interesting teaching methods. We went on a lot of field trips and really were provided with plenty of travel opportunities throughout Florence and Italy. Personal and Artistic Development in Florence

My educational experience was easily a 5/5, but a good deal of my learning was out of class, with so much free time and a relatively small home work load, there was plenty of time to explore and visit local museums, galleries, historical landmarks and so on. I would have never learned a language as fast as I did in Florence. Living everyday life is practice. For my Lifestyle in Renaissance Florence class, we sat in the classroom for 30 minutes, and were sent outside to actually see and experience what we just learned about. Great experience. I found the API Orientation incredibly helpful in preparing me for the educational experience - it's really important to realize that in a different country, classes can be taught differently and expectations differ also. There wasn't a lot of work but the work I did have was difficult. The grading system was mostly just like my home university so there wasn't any surprises there. Teachers expect you to just write down verbatim what they say without writing anything on chalkboards which was different for me. Overall though, the experience was wonderful. I would suggest any type of study abroad program to a person who is willing to take charge of the opportunity and make the most of it. Very few people get the chance, and it can be one of the best decisions of your life if you do it right.
