Though its history and landmarks are familiar to us from books and movies, there is no substitute for the first time you stand in front of the Colosseum where countless others have gone before you over two millennia. Visit ancient monuments such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums. Spend a summer, semester or academic year studying abroad with AIFS in Rome and you may just scratch the surface of what this timeless nation has to offer.

The program wants you to be able to truly experience your semester abroad so the work load isn't too challenging, but there is still a good amount. Many of the classes also integrate on site lectures to many of the historic sites of Rome which makes them much more enjoyable and allows you to really familiarize yourself with the city. The work load was not difficult. The only challenge was getting used to having 3 hour classes (this allowed for you to only have class twice a week and the rest free to travel). The best part was taking a history course with Professor Tricoli, and getting to go to the actual buildings that we were studying. view full review

There is work that needs to be done, but the professors are great about not overloading you with any work so that you can go out and enjoy the country you are studying in. My history class was awesome because I barely had to study the night before exams. I would recommend studying abroad with AIFS 100%. An ideal study abroad student should be open-minded, eager to meet new people and learn new things, and excited about experiencing a new culture/language. A good attitue is a must. This is an awesome program, the fees seem steep, but they include SO much so it's well worth it. Rome is a great location too. There's so much to do there. The only downside is the large amount of tourists, but I think it's a fair trade for the amount of things to do. You'll never be bored. There's great food, attractions, and nightlife. Since I took a summer program, the classes were more concentrated in time, but I felt that I learned a lot being able to literally see what I was studying from a dorm room just weeks before. Students who enjoy being independent and love big cities will enjoy this trip. You live on your own in a large cosmopolitan city with some language barriers. You have to be prepared to step out of your comfort zone to get the most out of your experience. view full review

Studying abroad is for someone looking for something more than the traditional college experience. You can spend your weekends at Frat Parties for 7 out of 8 semesters. I learned many things with AIFS Rome. I learned that to really know about someone you have to give them the chance to show you their life and culture. You must live as they do in order to understand their views on life. You should definitely do it. There is so much opportunity in Italy that you can not get in other countries. Italy has the history but one can also party there. It isn't Prague or Spain but there is so much more to do there and so many more cities to see. The courses would not be difficult for W&M students, but they are interesting & you will learn. It gives you plenty of time to experience Rome, which is the real educational experience. view full review
